The Coombs Alternative Education Boys Basketball Team has made history, finishing their season undefeated with an impressive 5-0 record in the Serrano League. This year, 15 student-athletes and team managers/statisticians contributed to the program’s remarkable success, showcasing exceptional teamwork and dedication.
Throughout the season, the Coombs Boys Basketball Team faced and triumphed over the following schools:
October 30, 2024: Mt. San Jacinto High School, Cathedral City
November 7, 2024: Amistad, Indio
November 14, 2024: Summit, La Quinta
November 19, 2024: Edward Wenzlaff, Desert Hot Springs
November 21, 2024: La Familia, Thermal
Superintendent Terrence Davis applauded the team’s efforts, “This undefeated season is a testament to the hard work, determination, and resilience of our student-athletes and coaches. It is accomplishments like these that showcase the extraordinary talent and dedication found in our schools. Congratulations to the Coombs Boys Basketball Team for their outstanding accomplishment!”
The Coombs Sports Program, led by Coach Roman Aja (Adult Education Teacher at Coombs), Coach Jo Taylor(Librarian at Coombs), and Mr. David Sanchez (Science and PE Teacher at New Horizon High School), offers students opportunities to participate in volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball each year. Depending on student interest, teams may be co-ed or separated by gender.
Dr. Melissa Lee, Principle of Coombs Alternative Education, highlighted the importance of the Sports Program in fostering a positive school culture. “The Coombs Sports Program is about more than just winning games; it’s about building connections, inspiring confidence, and creating a sense of belonging for every student. This season’s success reflects the dedication and spirit of our student-athletes and the coaches who support them. Their achievement is something the entire school can celebrate.”
The undefeated season highlights the dedication, skill, and resilience of Coombs’ student-athletes and their coaches. It also underscores the importance of extracurricular programs in building a strong, supportive school community.
In addition to the boys’ success, the Coombs Girls Team participated in an exciting 3 v. 3 match at La Familia, further demonstrating the strength of the school's athletic program.
